Athletics

Athletics and PE at StG are not just about competition—they are about building resilience, fundamental skills and the confidence to meet challenges head-on while fostering friendships and a lasting sense of community.

Physical Education (PE)

The Physical Education program at St. George’s Episcopal School is built on a foundation of developmental growth, joyful movement and inclusive participation. With a strong emphasis on age-appropriate progression, our curriculum, grading philosophy and class culture work together to create an environment where students feel confident, supported and excited to move.

PE meets 4 times per week in Middle School—in addition to scheduled recess times—because we know that middle school bodies need to move, reenergize and take a "brain break" amid rigorous academic classes.

Curriculum: PE is thoughtfully structured to support students’ development through progressive stages of growth. In Pre-K4 through 1st grade, the focus is on building a strong foundation in balance and movement, helping students develop body awareness, coordination and confidence. From 1st through 3rd grade, students continue to strengthen these foundational elements while beginning to acquire specific motor skills that prepare them for more complex activities. In 3rd through 8th grade, students apply their skills, balance and movement abilities in culminating games that emphasize an understanding of rules, teamwork and strategic thinking. This progression ensures that students not only develop physical competence but also the cognitive and social skills needed to engage meaningfully in a variety of athletic and recreational activities.

Culture: The culture of our PE program is rooted in creating a positive, welcoming environment where every student feels valued and supported. We prioritize fun and enjoyment in every class, believing that joyful movement fosters lifelong habits of physical activity and well being. Belonging is at the heart of our approach—every child is encouraged to participate, try new things and grow at their own pace, regardless of skill level. Students are regularly affirmed for their effort, teamwork and personal growth, helping to build confidence and a strong sense of self.

Athletics Clinics and Teams

StG students start to learn basic skill development and receive broad exposure to sports through Lower School clinics, and some Middle School teams are opened to 3rd and/or 4th graders.

In Middle School, students and teams learn the value of commitment, sportsmanship, teamwork and personal growth while experiencing competition and skill-building. Team membership comes with the obligation to attend practices, work hard and to put forth a high degree of effort in games. The level of commitment required increases as the level of competition increases.

On average, over 85% of St. George's Middle School students play at least one of our 10 sport offerings per year. We believe that the middle school years are an opportunity to try a variety of activities and discover new interests; as such, StG team sports have a no-cut policy. As a charter member of the New Orleans Athletic League (NOAL), St. George's competes in the smaller school division, offering both co-ed and single-gender teams, typically divided into 5th–6th grade and 7th–8th grade groups and sometimes by level of competition (e.g. Blue and Red teams). Game time is not guaranteed, though, whenever possible, we offer multiple teams on different levels of competition for individual sports, allowing a range of students to gain game experience and remain competitive.
