Our Episcopal Identity

St. George’s Episcopal School was founded in 1969 as the brainchild of St. George’s Episcopal Church clergy and members. The school began with nineteen students, and classes were held in the church’s undercroft, located on St. Charles Avenue. Over fifty years later, our community finds itself in its present location on Napoleon Avenue, serving students ages eight weeks through 8th grade and still strongly connected to St. George's Episcopal Church.

Community and inclusivity are vitally important to the mission of St. George’s. While we are an Episcopal school, we affirm many faiths, creeds and world views within our StG community. All students and families—from secular and non-secular households—are welcome at St. George’s Episcopal School. In fact, while 12% of responding 2025-2026 families noted that they are Episcopalian, a majority of our families are Catholic (27%) or identify as observers of another Christian denomination (13%). Over 11% of families noted that they celebrate multiple religions in their households, and 15% shared that they are agnostic or non-practicing. Other denominations observed in the data include Judaisim, Hinduism and Buddhism.

Our School Prayer

O God, our heavenly Father, we pray that you would bless us in our work and in our play.
Help us to persevere through challenges, show compassion to others, be respectful to our community and display integrity in all that we do.
Keep us in purity of heart, and let the life of the school go on from strength to strength and have its place in your Kingdom.
May St. George’s always be a place where we love to learn and learn to love.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Chapel

Chapel is a time where the 1st-8th grade StG community is invited to explore God's presence through reflection, activities, scripture and prayer. These meetings are important to StG life because they allow students space to engage with fundamental questions about themselves and their community. Drawing on passages from both the Hebrew Bible and the Christian New Testament, we teach virtues such as charity, wisdom, courage and justice during Chapel meetings for students. Our perspective is, of course, informed by the Episcopal faith, but our mission is to impart lessons of honor and ethics common to all cultures and people of goodwill.

Chapel at St. George’s seeks to engage students in a thoughtful and lively manner. Students are encouraged to ask questions, to analyze content critically and ultimately to understand that regardless of faith or creed, we are all part of the human family and worthy of love and dignity. Students in 1st-4th grade are seated by House during their bi-weekly Chapel meetings; Middle School students meet weekly during Advisory with the Middle School Chaplain.

Relationship with St. George's Episcopal Church

Our ties to the St. George’s Episcopal Church stem from the school's founding and continue through ongoing collaborations, including our chaplaincy program. Chaplains also offer youth mentorship, providing students with a nonjudgemental ear on questions of faith and spirituality. Chaplains work with the school’s Director of Lower School and Director of Middle School, as well as classroom teachers to inform their lesson planning. Our youth ministry encourages partnerships with other youth organizations, both secular and faith-based, to build community and student service/volunteer opportunities.

St. George's traditions of our Lessons and Carols service and 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony are held annually at St. George's Episcopal Church on St. Charles Avenue. We can't imagine these beautiful, meaningful traditions being held anywhere else.

The Rector of St. George's Episcopal Church also serves on St. George's Board of Trustees.
