In Early Childhood, StG’s Project Approach creates a dynamic, play-based learning environment where teachers scaffold learning across the curriculum to encourage curiosity and exploration in each child. Through a mix of one-on-one, small-group and large-group instruction, Early Childhood students dig into foundational, pre-academic skills such as social-emotional intelligence and fine and gross motor skills. And, while most of these groupings happen in or near the classroom—where students are most comfortable—you’ll also find groups enjoying time in the Early Childhood art studio, the Jefferson Market Gymnasium, the Mims-Laudemann Library or even Dr. K's office!

Starting in Lower School, we tailor our curriculum and small groups to each child’s abilities, interests and learning profiles. All reading and math small groups happen near or in the classroom, with groups led by classroom lead teachers, dedicated small-group instructors and Resource specialists. Specials like PE, theater arts, science, music, visual art, French and library meet across campus. This small-group and specials approach builds students’ confidence and independence to develop their own creative and academic interests in a space that's safe for risk-taking and exploration.

Starting in fifth grade, students move independently between classes, carve out their own space with assigned lockers and follow a block schedule—all things preparing them for life as a high schooler. Classes in language arts and math are determined by student learning profiles and abilities in each grade level, and advanced courses in 8th grade allow for high school credit in world language and math. Creative Arts electives are interest-based, including Orff music, theater arts, visual art and band. Each Middle School student is assigned to a small advisory group, which meets regularly and is led by a faculty member serving as a mentor.

St. George’s intentionally ends in Eighth Grade to best support the intellectual, social, emotional and physical needs of elementary-aged students, especially middle schoolers experiencing great amounts of change as they endeavor to discover who they are as individuals.

Schools that include 9th-12th grade often have a culture that revolves around their high school students. Our Nursery through Eighth Grade model, which is supported by fact-based research,  provides stability, community and opportunity for our students. It allows for learning and growth in a nurturing environment where it is safe to take risks and explore-- and do so with more opportunities to lead.

St. George’s believes that a coeducational setting enriches the educational experience of our students and plays an important role in their academic and social and emotional growth. A co-ed student body introduces an expanded range of perspectives, viewpoints and experiences.

St. George’s does not only prepare our students for high school; we prepare them for the world—a world broader and more inclusive than a single sex. Coeducation provides our students with an advantage during their school years that will carry throughout their adult lives.

We believe that ending in 8th grade provides a purposeful and protective environment for younger learners—especially during their most formative years. By focusing exclusively on early childhood through middle school, we create a space where students can grow, lead and belong—without the pressures that come from sharing a campus with much older peers. Our oldest students are still children themselves, and that matters.
